๐คRobots.txt Tester & Crawler Simulator Documentation & Guide
๐How to Use This Tool
- Paste robots.txt Directives: Enter your existing or planned robots.txt rules into the editor, or choose from pre-configured SEO and AI crawler presets.
- Select Target Crawler User-Agent: Choose which search engine bot or AI crawler you want to test (e.g., Googlebot, Bingbot, GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or wildcard *).
- Enter Test Paths: Input specific URL paths (e.g., /admin/, /api/v1/users, /blog/post-1) to evaluate whether crawler access is permitted or blocked.
- Inspect Verdict & Matching Rule: Review the color-coded Allowed or Blocked status along with the exact directive line that triggered the decision.
โ๏ธTechnical Specifications & RFC 9309 Parsing Engine
Robots.txt parsing follows strict IETF RFC 9309 standards. When both Allow and Disallow rules match a path, the most specific (longest string) rule takes precedence.
Testing crawler access before updating server robots.txt files prevents accidental de-indexing of critical site sections and governs AI bot indexing policies.
๐กPractical Crawler Governance Use Cases
- Verifying that staging directories, administrative portals, and private APIs are effectively blocked from search bots.
- Confirming that disallow rules targeting AI scrapers (like GPTBot) do not inadvertently block organic Googlebot discovery.
- Debugging complex pattern-matching rules with wildcards ($ and *) before deploying them to production servers.
